About UnSouthern

Exploring issues from an unSouthern perspective.

Who Am I?

My name is Micah, and I am from the South. I was born in Nashville and raised in the surrounding counties. I went to college at Emory University, and since graduating, have lived my entire adult life in the Atlanta area.

I knew from an early age that I was not of the South, only from the South. My perspective has been non-regional, not even explicitly American when I could help it. But what I wasn’t ready to admit until recently is that being from the South ties one to it inextricably. That limbo state, the state of being from the South but not of the South, is what I like to call unSouthern. I hope to explore that side of myself here.

What Is This?

This blog is a forum for fun, insightful, and constructive discussions. Some of the topics are frivolous. Some are serious, while some are serious only to me. Some are about Southern identity. Some are about what it means to go beyond that identity. All will involve my unsolicited opinions. (At least until I have a staff.) Many of my views will be mistaken; some may be flat-out wrong. When that happens, I can only express relief, because people who are right all the time are obnoxious.
